Social media is going to happen, our education system needs to harness it and use it to our advantage. From elementary school, all the way to college, teachers are finding new and creative ways to integrate social media into their curriculum. Students are now able to reinforce what they've learned in school, at home. This is done by collaborating with peers on social media web sites about projects, specific concepts introduced in class, and other assignments guided by the teacher. Students can ask the teacher a questions on a social media page and the rest of the class who might have the same/similar question will see the teachers answer. It's just a very efficient tool that can be very useful. In my Instrumental Methods class we have a very large end of the year project. There is a facebook group for this project, which serves the purpose of group collaboration, which is the key to authentic learning. The teacher, as well as all of the students in the class are members in the group, and I must say I find it extremely useful. I do believe social media can be distracting to a students schoolwork, however I believe it's going to happen wether we like it or not. So we mine as well embrasse it, and harvest it's potential educational value.
